Crabby Grannies Sugar Cookies Anyone?

Sugar Cookie Recipe Showing Sugar cookie Angels

This sugar cookie recipe is one I learned from my mother which I now lovingly call “Crabby Granny” since it’s so difficult to get her to reveal some of her secret recipes. I actually think she copied this one and just called it her own…. You know the type:) Never the less this sugar cookie recipe totally kicks butt and Santa has enjoyed these with his glass of milk every year from my children as a “Thank You” for the cool Christmas presents he leaves under the tree on Christmas morning.

Ingredients for the sugar cookie recipe:

  • 1/3 cup margarine or butter
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon milk
  • 1 Teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla
  • dash of salt
  • Powder Sugar Icing

Directions for the sugar cookie recipe:

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Beat margarine and shortening with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 30 seconds.
  3. Add half the flour, the egg, sugar, milk, baking powder, vanilla and salt.
  4. Beat until thoroughly combined
  5. Beat in remaining flour
  6. Divide dough in half and cover tightly with wax paper.
  7. Let chill in refrigerator for at least 3 hours.

Rolling out the sugar cookie dough:

Lightly flour your work surface. Roll out half the sugar cookie dough at a time to about 1/8th inch thick. Cut into desired shapes using your sugar cookie cutters. I am personally a huge fan of the Wilton  sugar cookie cutters 🙂

Lift your sugar cookie cutouts gently from your surface with a metal spatula that has been dipped in flour. This will help your sugar cookie dough to not stick to the spatula.

Bake in a 375 degree oven for about 7-8 minutes. Let cool on pan just for a couple of minutes before moving them to a wire cooling rack. This will help the bottom of your sugar cookies to release from the pan easier.

Ice your sugar cookies any way you wish!

Here is the recipe for a simple powder sugar icing:

1/3 cup butter or margarine

4 1/2 cups sifted powder sugar

1/4 cup milk

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

In bowl, beat butter or margarine until fluffy.

Gradually add in half the sifted powder sugar beating well. Slowly beat in one cup milk and the vanilla extract. Slowly beat in remaining powder sugar and additional milk if needed. Color your icing with food coloring and your ready to ice those sugar cookies!
